Belongingness is the feeling of being accepted (authentically accepted when you're being the real you), valued, and included. It matters. Humans are wired to be in groups.

Belongingness has been described as a fundamental need - as important to humans as food and shelter.
Imagine this scenario.... you have had a tense interaction with someone in your workplace the day before. You've tried to make sense of it overnight, replaying it in your mind. A part of you may feel angry, another part worried. The next day at work the subconscious scanner within you is always aware of where that colleague is. Its goal is to protect you by constantly scanning your environment.
Sound familiar?
This scanner has been around for a long time. From an evolutionary perspective it was essential we remain in the tribe. To be kicked out, to not belong, was certain death. Your scanner hasn't had the upgrade - it's still programmed for life a thousand years ago...
It's more than that though. We feel safe and energised when we truly feel we belong. It's a place from which we can be creative, take risks, and be vulnerable toward others.
Part of sociometer's theory is that... we judge our relational value via our impression of how others treat us. This means our self-esteem is based on our perception of how others value us, rather than something we feel within us.
